History of LBD

The Little Black Dress is synonymous with class and style, it can be worn for any occasion and in any environment. From Coco Chanel to Christian Dior designs of the early 20th century to the iconic mid-century 'Breakfast at Tiffany’s' LBD worn by Audrey Hepburn, the power of the LBD cannot be underestimated.

The 1960’s saw Jackie Kennedy and Twiggy sporting a mini dress version paired with bug eyed shades, to be replaced in the 1970’s with floor sweeping chiffon styles.

As the 1980’s dawned the shine of taffeta skirts, tulle and oversized bows were seen everywhere and the LBD enjoyed a rebirth since the Golden Hollywood era of 50 years before.

By the 1990’s silhouettes were once more sleeker, Versace shocked the world with Elizabeth Hurley’s ‘safety pinned’ showstopper, and who can forget Princess Diana’s so called ‘revenge’ LBD. By the turn of the century, ladies of the Noughties favoured demure, ladylike dresses….

Fast forward to 2017…..and we are spoilt for choice, yet short on time. Let us guide you through Day to Night transformation….

our busy lives...

Our careers are busier than ever, to meet the ever increasing demands of flexible roles. And our wardrobes have to work harder too, from board meetings to client lunches and after work drinks.

Tip – Think ‘tough’, invest in hard wearing fabrics which will keep their shape, and not lose colour from frequent washes.

Tip – Think ‘science’, look out for ‘no iron’ or ‘crease free’ tags, and ‘stretch technology’ which will save you time and streamline your silhouette.

Tip – Think ‘fabric’, look at the labels and select breathable fabrics where possible to ensure comfort for you and your body.

When selecting an LBD to take you from day to night consider an over the knee length. This is flattering for all heights and shapes as it draws the eye to one of the slimmest parts of the leg.

This LBD is a wrap dress which are also a great choice as they offer comfort through the ability to adjust the waist, also allowing for ease of movement during a busy day.

A sleeveless dress allows the widest variety of options for cover-ups. From a jacket or cardigan for day, by adding a brooch or changing up to a lace bolero or a shawl you are evening ready.

A wider shoulder or shoulder strap is considered more modest for daytime to prevent showing too much flesh.

So how do we change it up to become 'Night Ready' when time may not be on our side?

Tip – Think neckline.

Necklaces are an affordable way to change any outfit. Look at the neckline of your LBD to assess what length will sit best, without becoming lost. The narrow V of this LBD needs a necklace to sit high.

An excellent option, especially for those with longer necks is a choker. Bang on trend this season and keeping it to a metallic looks classic.

Tip – Think practical.

If you simply cannot be without your handbag for an evening, then a stunning oversized clutch is for you. Large bags were seen all over the catwalks for Autumn/Winter 2017.

By matching the gold of the choker, and also selecting gold and black earrings to finish the look, you are projecting a sophisticated air.

Tip – Think colour pop

If you are not keen on sparkle or have a love of colour then why not use a colour pop.

As with this velvet effect cerise clutch by Pari Kau, it adds depth and interest to an otherwise neutral pallet. Cerise is the pink of the season, and if you are not sure that it matches your skin tone then a 'nod to the trend' with your accessories is perfect.

Tip – Think weather.

Even though you may be travelling door to door by car, you do not want to be caught out if the taxi it late!

A fur stole in a rich cream is cosy enough to take the edge off and gives texture to your look. Channel your inner Marilyn!

Tip – Think outside the box.

Many models and celebrities use accessories in multiple ways, as it is an easy way to create new looks.

Why not use a large scarf as a shawl? By draping around the arms, it can beautifully show off toned arms. And in warm pinks and oranges, these autumnal colours set off the plain dress.

The silver clutch bag finishes the look and adds a further dimension through the glitter finish.
